Brainy types flocked to the city, universities, libraries and institutes were opened and Germans spread over the world to explore new regions, bringing back strange plants, animals and stories. Although Berlin lost out somewhat to new scientific centres in the USA, UK and Asia, the city still has what it takes to grab the occasional Nobel prize. This year, five grand old institutions celebrate their collective anniversary with the Science Year, packed with events, some of which are English-language and accessible to visitors.
